There’s something of a seabird in this carving - I almost called it Looking Out to Sea (maybe it is a relative of the Guillemot). The raw block of stone, before carving, had a twisting, arching feel and this is what determined the pose - of a bird appearing to look over its shoulder, directing its gaze out to engage with the wider world.
Carved in Polyphant - a Cornish Soapstone, which presents with mottled colouring of greys, greens and yellows, on a deep, richly dark background. I’ve polished it to a soft sheen. Polyphant is a delicate stone and will not tolerate well our damp, frosty winters, so this is a piece for indoors.
