Ring Ouzels are thrushes that come to the UK to breed. They arrive from late March, nesting in upland areas in steep sided valleys, crags and gullies. Nests are located on or close to the ground in vegetation, typically in heather.
Old and local names for the Ring Ouzel include ‘fell Blackbird’, ‘hill Blackbird’, ‘moor Blackbird’, ‘rock Ouzel’ and ‘mountain Blackbird’.
I’ve seen them at a distance on a rocky outcrop, standing proud, and looking much like a Blackbird with striking white breast band.
Carved in Yorkstone as part of my Spring Birds collection.
