A Pair of Grey Partridges

This commission began with a wonderful challenge. How do you make a sculpture of a bird for someone who knows that bird intimately?

The pair of Grey Partridges were commissioned as a gift for someone who had spent many years studying these beautiful, elusive birds. Through is research he had come to know their habits and behaviour in extraordinary detail, and had written a book about them, bringing together his observations with the stunning photographs he had taken in the field.

So, this sculpture needed to be about more than appearance. It needed to capture something of the life he had observed so closely.

The idea was to carve a pair - a male and female - together in a moment that felt true to the character of Grey Partridges. We talked about their different roles and the subtle relationship between them; the male watchful and protective, standing alert to what is happening around him, while the female remains more comfortably within the family group.

I wanted the two birds to feel connected without becoming overly posed. There is something beautifully understated about partridges. They are birds of the open farmland, often quiet and unobtrusive, and their closeness is expressed through small gestures and an awareness of one another.

Capturing these qualities in stone meant paying close attention to posture, balance and expression. The male needed a certain alertness - his body carrying that sense of vigilance - while the female could be softer and more settled. Together, their contrasting poses create a sense of a living relationship rather than two separate birds simply placed side by side.

For me, this is one of the most rewarding aspects of carving wildlife. The more closely you look, the more there is to discover. An animal’s character is often found in the smallest details: the way it stands, rests, watches or moves alongside another.

And in this case, those details held particular significance.

The finished pair was created for someone whose life had been so closely intertwined with these birds. It became a celebration not only of the Grey Partridge itself, but of his years of observation, research and affection for them.

I love the thought that a piece commissioned as a gift can carry that level of personal meaning. It is something greater than an object to own - it reflects something the recipient has devoted time and attention to, and something they have come to understand and care deeply about.
