Signs of Autumn

Autumn is making its presence felt - each day apples fall, ripe and ready

The scent of apples ripening, the tree buzzing with insects feeding, and bird chatter within its branches are all signs of Autumn arriving and settling in.

Some mornings have been hazy with heavy mist, with a strengthening wind. I’ve added a wool layer under my work jacket. And how the golden shimmering sun, picks out the smallest changes of leaf hue and mellowing greens.

I have to be quick to pick them, the insects and birds are feeding on my ripening apples

Autumn smells so good, the ground has a different sort of beauty, I’m noticing it, along with the brightness of berries. The wind is more buffeting, sounding different in the trees. In bursts it brings down the apples with a thud and sends the sycamore keys spinning and spiralling. It brings too, a new rhythm.

I’m carving in waves of energy, Autumn energy. The pauses creating a subtle shift in rhythm, naturally fitting my own instinctive flow. There is an ease and strength in trusting your own cycles. Nature’s seasons teach us all we need to know.

These early Autumn vitalities mark the beginning of new carvings in the studio.
