Wild Boar sculpture
In carving the Wild Boar sculpture I wanted to bring something of the animal’s formidable and courageous character into the piece.
It is easy to see how the Boar symbolises fierce courage, determination and protection. It represents primal instinct and a willingness to charge fearlessly into challenges. Within ancient mythology, folklore and spiritual traditions the representation varies, but a strong personality is clear.
I like some of the meanings surrounding the female Wild Boar, which bring a sense of generosity, abundance and nourishment of the earth. The Boar’s rooted connection to the soil brings a grounded and instinctive feel, one which encourages inner strength.
There is something of this in my Wild Boar - which is carved in Portuguese Rosa Marble which seems to lend a controlled gentleness despite the strong, determined stance.
Also in my mind is the story from Norse mythology, of Gullinbursti (meaning ‘golden-bristled’, or ‘golden-mane’). Gullinbursti is the magical glowing Boar ridden by Freyr, god of fertility and sunshine. The tale of the making of this creature is fascinating - the Boar was forged during a legendary contest to create treasure that could rival anything made by other master craftsmen - his bristles and mane were made of pure, shining gold. They shone so brilliantly that they could illuminate the darkest nights, lighting a path for Freyr wherever he travelled.
It became a need for this sculpture, that I should emphasise in the carving somehow the mane and tail. For each I’ve given a flourish of vitality, a wave in the high mane and a swirl in the tail.
