Emergence

The Barn Owl chicks are developing fast, their personalities surfacing. They’re appearing more regularly out of the nest box, and have taken their first flights out over the meadow. Short forays with frequent returns to the safety of the shed and their nest box. It is to the nest box that the parent Owls still bring food, so the youngsters line-up on the platform watching and waiting when they know a feed is imminent.

I question why I am so smitten with the Owl image. My senses are raised at the sight, I’m enveloped by the beauty, something all encompassing and powerful - like part of me has become an Owl too. They have passed on some knowledge which I must surface from the depths of me, from its concealment, and make sense of it.

What arrives is an impulse - to transform what I have (my piece of stone) into something that is created (a sculpture).

Sometimes great beauty is hard to describe, but the desire to do so very strong.

It is a wonderfully human thing that we tend to hold longer an aesthetic object, than a useful one.
