Spring birds beginning to emerge in stone

Head of a bird being carved in stone

Several Spring birds have begun to take shape in stone over the past weeks.

Their forms are guided as much by time spent watching them in the landscape as by the character of the stone itself. The Curlews are active and I regularly see them flying down from the moor into the pasture sloping away to the South of me. Their flight is powerful and I’m surprised again and again by how big they are when you’re close.

Once on the ground, there’s walking, calling, feeding and preening

The Plover’s remain secretive and while on the lookout for them I keep an ear open for the Cuckoo.

The hot Spring days have made the Blackbirds lazy - one spread-eagled on the compost heap and a female not flying at all, but walking and stopping and walking a bit more.

A small group of carvings will be shared shortly.

Mailing list subscribers will see the finished pieces first before they’re released publicly.
