How Stone is Shaping Me

People ask what it is like to shape stone, and I could talk about the tools, the dust, the weight – but that’s not really it.

What surprises me most is how much the stone shapes me.

I used to think I was carving it. Now I know we’re in conversation.

Stone doesn’t hurry; it doesn’t respond to force. It asks me to slow down, to listen, to adjust.

It reminds me again and again that the form will come, but only in its time, through my patience.

There are days I arrive in the studio with urgency in my body. The kind of tightness that wants results. The stone softens that. Not by being soft, but by being resistant until I become more present.

It’s not just material

It is a teacher. A teacher of rhythm, of return, of stillness inside movement.

Working with stone has shaped how I move through everything else – how I listen, how I rest, how I stay with something even when I’m unsure.

I used to think the goal was to finish the piece. Now I know it is to stay in relationship with it.

Maybe that is what makes the finished work hold a sense of stillness – not because I made it, but because I stayed with it.

If you’ve ever felt the weight of a decision, or the rough edge of waiting – you’ve already known what stone feels like. That’s what I carve. That’s what the sculptures hold.

Thank you for being here.
